Dexter
Weekend Toy Owned by Monzta

  • This is Dexter, my 1989 Aerodeck EXi, bought in Feb 2014 to replace my very rusty silver 1986 model. It has just 33,000 miles and is in excellent, rust-free condition. The plan was to use him as a daily runner but he is now a weekend toy to preserve his great condition.

It all went wrong in June 2014 when an old chap drove into the side of me ...

Four months of wrangling with his insurance company resulted in them finally agreeing to repair Dexter rather than writing him off. I used the parts from my silver Aerodeck and he was sent to a proper classic car restorer rather then their own crash repair place, Dexter now looks as good as new.

The engine was given a good clean and tidy up. Here's the before and after shots ...

Dexter has been joined by a new friend, a 1987 EX manual ...

  1. What a great example of an Accord. long may you enjoy your time with dexter.
  2. Great car you are very lucky to one in such good condition. I had a silver 2.0EXi 1986 reg from 1988 to 1996 until young lady ran into back when I was stationary behind two other cars. Car was written off as was car in front into which I was rammed.
Most fondly remembered car I have ever owned. Original battery & exhaust at 10 years old, only rotar arm needed replacing.
Pity Honda did not continue to develop as would be much better than a VW Scirroco, another of Honda's many missed opportunities.
  3. That is a lovely Aerodeck :Niceone:
  4. You should be very proud of Dexter. You've done a superb job.
    Quite stunning.
I was lucky enough to have a 1986 saloon. She was my first Honda.

Thanks @Nels. Yes, I'm very proud of Dexter. I'm paranoid now though since he was hit last year so I don't use him as much as I probably should do.

They're great cars the 3rd Generation Accords aren't they?

Thanks for that. They really are great cars to own and drive. One of the few cars I've ever owned that I struggle to find any reason to fault.

Hmm, interesting. Could be a new one or one of two I know that might have found new homes. Nice to know it's out there and being used though.

Like most eighties Hondas, it's the rear sills and rear arches that give way first to the tinworm. Mechanically they'll just keep running forever. My Aerodeck is a CA5 chassis designation.

Oh man, I had my chassis codes all mixed up. I'm sure your mileage has something to do with how reliable it's been for you. It seems like there's always something to fix on my old Honda.

Maybe I've been luck y but out of six Hondas I've never had an unreliable one yet.

I'm chuffed to bits with the car, I've wanted one since 1986 ... it's been a long wait to finally get one.

  9. WOW it look's like it just hit 88 mph and jumped straight out of 1989 in to 2015 it's really nice to see that you got it repaired and not wrote off and thank goodness for your doner car it must have taken a lot of hassel out of the whole experience thumbs up and likes from me I love these old Honda's

Yeah, it is a bit of a timewarp car. It still has the original Honda floormats without a mark on them plus the rare Honda dashmat. It was like no one had ever sat in it when I bought it.

I couldn't believe it when it got hit, a crazy old man driving on the wrong side of the road. :Frown: Thank God I had my old silver one sat in the garage still. I was going to sell it but glad I didn't ... it saved my bacon. The parts are nearly impossible to find these days short of buying a complete car.

Nearly 26 years old and not a spot of rust so far. Rot is what usually kills these, usually around the rear sills and arches.
