Silver Spike
Daily Driver Owned by JayG

  • I have owned a fair mixture of cars and vans but, after moving to London in 2004, I found that I was using my car less-and-less. In 2006 it was time to bid farewell to my 71 VW Karmann Ghia Coupe. After a decade of relying on public transports and bandmates, I felt it was about time I got on the road again.

I wanted something different, something I could load up with gear, something I could use for camping and something my parents can get in and out of easily - they can't really do low cars any more.

I looked at Stepwgns but the insurance costs were too high - even though I'm forty-bluddy-five! It doesn't help that I live in NE London and that, not having driven for 10 years means I have no, no claims (even though between 1988 and 2006 I was never without at least one car).

I had my heart set on something JDM as I have never had electric toys in my cars or power steering, for that matter.

After looking around I discovered the Mobilio Spike and then saw them with Mugen and Modulo body kits. I saw a couple on eBay but I know one seller had quite a bad reputation.

A Facebook friend who details cars had a Stepwgn imported by a guy he had done some work for. He was impressed by the quality of his imports and that's why he used him to get his wgn. I dropped his contact, Logan at Kuro, a message.

After a month or two of trawling the Japanese auction houses he found this low mileage, clean Modulo kitted Spike. I wanted the Mugen kit but, for a nice clean one, it was bumping the price up considerably. We put a bid in for the silver Spike and it actually came in under budget.

It missed the boat it was originally booked on as the previous owner was late in handing over the documents but it is in the UK now.

I have had it cleaned and detailed by Auto Genie and hopefully getting a CAT 1 alarm fitted before I actually pick it up. I'm am currently awaiting the V5 so we can get its plates made.

It's not bad for a 13 year old car though.

Thanks @FirstHonda  The amount of insurance companies who asked me if it was a motorbike proves that it's fairly unknown here

Thanks @BB Baboonface. I've seen videos of the Sprintex chargers on Jazz and Fits so I am guessing so. There appears to be about the same amount of room under the hood.

Thanks @legend-ary. The wait was (is) killing me but it was worth holding out for such a clean one. Stuart at Auto Genie is great at getting the best out of cars too. He spent half a day cleaning, decontaminating, waxing, treating and polishing her.

I hope to tweak/dress it up a bit - I really want to replace the air filter with something tasty-looking - so will be looking at what people are doing to their Jazz/Fit
