On the 7th Generation Accord Saloon they used the rear disc pads for parking brakes but on the 8th Generation saloon in some model areas they use brake shoes as their parking brakes even on Saloons. This guide will cover both Tourer and Saloon so both cars are covered.

One quick way of identify what type of system is employed on your car just look at the rear wheel hub assembly.

If you see this cable attached to a lever you know its the Rear disc brake type.

if you see this on your rear wheel hub assembly then you know you have the Rear drum in disc brake type.

    Inspection
Pull the parking brake lever (A) with 196 N (20 kgf, 44 lbf) of force to fully apply the parking brake. Use a digital force gauge meter if you want to measure this scientifically or use count the clicks. The parking brake lever should be locked within the specified number of clicks.
    Lever locked clicks:
Rear disc brake type: 6 to 8
Rear drum in disc brake type: 5 to 7

If the number of lever clicks is not as specified, adjust the parking brake.
    Top Tip:
Rear drum in disc brake type: Minor parking brake lever adjustments (1 to 2 clicks) can be made with the adjusting nut. If a larger adjustment is required, follow the major adjustment procedure using the adjuster at the parking brake drum. After installing new parking brake shoes and/or new brake disc/drum, make sure you drive the vehicle for ‘‘break-in''.

Adjustment - Rear disc brake type

    • Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
    • Release the parking brake lever fully.
    • Remove the console box mat (A) then open the lid (B).
Top Tip: Get some masking tape 3 inch long stick one inch on the mat and the other to pull the console box mat. No need to use screwdrivers and leave marks everywhere:Wink:. You can use sellotape but it leave a sticky residue.
