Just in case folks were wondering:

In order for the button on the dashboard to open/close the power tail gate, all the doors on the car need to be unlocked.

Then hold the button down for about one second and the tail gate will open. Ditto with closing.

For those with keyless entry, as long as the doors are unlocked, you do not need to have the ignition on etc.

    Hope this helps!

Doesn't the CR-V fob have a separate button for the tailgate like the 7th and 8th Generation tourers? The 8th you have double unlock on the 7th one unlock all and then tailgate button on the fob for opening and closing..

Yes the fob has a button for the open/close function on the EX models. Not sure about other non-EX versions.
