Most of the Honda engines are much the same to adjust valves except engine rotation on the earlier ones here is a video
for a D16 engine simple enough done if you have a free Saturday interval is 25k miles. The timing belt change isn't too bad a job either assuming you can get the blessed crank bolt out. Interval I believe is 60k miles. Don't take my intervals as gospel I don't have the manual for a D series engine there should be others along to confirm.

many thanks for your quick reply... very helpful. I thought I had better ask because the company I bought the car from said it was 96 months ( 8 years ) for a timing belt change. and the last one was done ( according to the full service history ) five years ago. so, will be asking what locking tool is required for the crank shaft as the bolt looks a bit of a swine to get off.... I am well used to doing timing belts on many cars vans etc. but little Honda engines are totally new. once again , thankyou for your advice.

I've got some pics of doing a timing belt on a D16 and had been meaning to do a guide on it but just haven't got round to it. It's pretty straight forward but the space is very cramped around that area.

Here's a crank pulley bolt I cracked open just last evening (in prep for removing timing chain cover on an Accord.

You can see the crank pulley locking tool in this first picture
    IMG_20160621_200358. IMG_20160621_201209. IMG_20160621_201217.

With a good 6' extension long on the breaker bar in total I had to turn the whole more than 90 degrees before it finally let go

This what happened to my trusty 2' long extension. I've cracked open many a crank bolt with this extension but this one was one too many, just look at how twisted and distorted it's got ! I had to resort to joining two extension bars together.

@mick. if you wait a few days I'll try and write up a guide for doing the timing belt.

You need a timing belt kit, which will comprise of the belt and the tensioner.

well, I haven't been on here for quite some time( due to nursing my beloved wife through some serious health issues) however, I can now get back to the job of replacement of my bloomin timing belt and valve clearances. I have the belt and water pump kit all I need now is the valve clearance. does any one of you bright lot know what the gaps are for a d16 n engine . many thanks in advance....

    D16N ?? Not sure there is a D16N

In the D16 series there are A,B,V,W,Y and Z variants.

Can you recheck which one you have and we'll get you the info you need.

many thanks speedy. the engine number is D16W130154... the D16N was the number I got from the handbook. the D16Wis the number off the VIN plate. so sorry for the confusion. ( and also the late reply)

Special Note:You can use a D16Z Cam in a D16Y Head but you have to use the Cam Gear from a D16Z because it'll be a 1/2 timing tooth off..same goes for D16Y cam in D16Z Head, just use Cam Gear for a D16Y..Do NOT buy any aftermarket Cam Gear for a D16Y from a company if they only have one Cam Gear available for the 88 thru 00 Ds.I recommend and use a AEM Gear, they have the right Cam Gears for 88-95s and 96-00s

the 260 was designed to be just a stock replacement without having too many aftermarket bolt-ons, where the 272 works better with modifications.

    also the 260 out-accelerates the 272 till ~3500rpm where the 272 out-performs.

My gut feeling is that the torque specs for the D16W should be the same as the D16Y but I'm not 100% sure.

Need some find some confirmation of that.

well, job done. apart from topping up with antifreeze/ coolant. didn't take too long ( once the crankshaft pulley bolt decided to let go).the next question is. what antifreeze do I need. it has green in at the moment but Honda tells me it is not the correct type... any advice greatly received.

many thanks. will do. just got to order it from local dealer. I now have the coolant.. started it up and hey presto another problem, the tickover is all over the place, it ranges from virtual stall to about 1400. just tap the pedal and it drops back and the settles to about 850.. anybody any ideas I have took the cable off and it has had a good soaking with release oil

So have you changed the coolant? If yes then this sounds like there is air in there.

First of all do not drive the car with this issue as it will over heat and blow the head gasket. Now have a read of the following, the principle should be the same even though it is for the Accord.

    Coolant change (Accord/7th Generation - )

A full guide, however it uses a special funnel which many on the forums own so if you don't have it refer to the above method.

A simple way to bleed the radiator without special tools is to run the engine for about 20 mins with the radiator cap off and the heater controls set to hot.

This is slightly less effective and takes a bit longer to bleed the air than when done with the special tool that gives a big header tank above radiator.
