Hi everyone, been reading through a few posts on the forum, looks a great site & setup so hoping to get some quality advice!

I've been offered to buy 2nd hand, through a friend of the family a 2005 Accord 2.2 diesel Estate/tourer' executive'.

My concern is that the mileage is very high for a 2005, it's 220,000 miles.

Originally it was a company car and then bought from the company by the employee who then sold it after sometime to his sister who currently owns the car. Neither of them have the service history details but informed me it was serviced regularly by Honda main dealer upto 2010. So, I contacted Honda UK directly who confirmed 9 services recorded at 2 dealerships. Last service recorded 7/1/10 @ 180,487 miles.

The sister has told me she had a new alternator fitted last summer, independant garage i believe not main dealership, and that's all she knows.
I'm trying to establish if things like a new clutch has been fitted / catalytic convertor / or any suspension arms etc etc as the mileage is high.

I am going to view the car this weekend as she lives very close to where i am in Essex. She had told me it has a scratch down one side, not deep, but still . . also a scratch / indent in the dashboard where the car was used to transport some long lengths of material when used as a company car. Apart from that no other issues.

She's asking for £1800 ono , MOT till Nov 12, taxed till July 12.

Can anybody give a heads up on what to look for / listen out for and, in their own opinion, is this worth the asking price?

    Would really appreciate any advice.

    Many Thanks

    Scott.

Hi Scott and welcome to AOC
There is few things that i know of to check on that model.
    Exhaust manifold
Timing chain(on prefacelift model they can be a bit noisy)
Sorry i can't help you much more but there will be other members here who knows lot more about this then me to give you more advice.
Check 7th Generation section, you should find lot of helpfull info there and what to look for.

    Hi Scott

    Welcome to the forum.

The decision is yours, but speaking personally, if it was me I wouldn't. 9 services over 180000 miles means 20000 miles per service on average when they should have been done at 12500 max, possibly no service at all in the last 40000, and no details of the history so you can't find out if and when known and potentially very expensive issues on this car such as the exhaust manifold, VSA module, timing chain and clutch were replaced - have a look round the site for more details of these issues.

Let us know what you decide, and how it turns out.

welcome to the forum! by all means take a look at the car and have a listen to the engine. at that sort of mileage pre-facelift or not, its likely the timing chain wants replacing and the exhaust manifold no doubt. i would hazzard a guess at it needing a clutch allso, but again the mileage suggests it may allso need a flywheel. all of these together warrants removing the engine altogether which we are quite used to a Holdcroft honda. if you do put an offer in i would bare in mind all these possible pitfalls and make it known to the seller they won't get a great deal for it anyway. let us know how you get on

Wow, great response guys. I had read about the cracked manifold problem / fumes in the cabin, so was going to try and find out if that had been replaced. And like Sayama had said, seems serviced every 20,000 , but cannot check beacuse nobody has the service booklet / stamps etc etc, she is trying to get her brother to find it!

I won't doing high miles, i just want an estate as i have a dog and my parents live in Devon so quite a trek from Essex with the family. My previous old banger was an Escort estate which has been rear ended in an accident and will be written off Cat C, so looking for a cheap estate around the 2k mark and this was offered to me. I'll be taking a look at it this Sunday and let you know.
With regards to the timing chain Beefy, i thought chains wouldn't need replacing like a belt does, i guess thats not correct then? Would it only need replacing if it's worn / noisy?

Hello and welcome Scott. Chains don't last forever but you're right it would only need replacing if worn and noisy. Personally with the servicing I wouldn't touch it unless it was around the grand mark. But with the understanding that if anything expensive went that would be it. If you got a couple of years out of it, a grand would be a good price.

there is no real service limit or schedule as sutch but over 200k miles chains will normaly have stretched that mutch there tentioners are at there limit and will become noisey. if the car has been over due services aswel, the chain will be more worn because of that alone. its a common misconception that they are lifetime parts, it all depends on the mileage/age and how well looked after the engine is. its a big gamble if you only plan for the car to be a run arround. 2k could well end up costing you almost twice that if the chain did break or require replacing while you own it.

Given what happened to me with the HP Diesel pump going and the resulting £2k bill, I doubt I'd be keen to buy it.

oh jeez, now i'm rapdily going off the car, lol. I know that spending around £2k i not going to get much, preferably i want an estate, but most seem to have had hard life with big mileage.
I will go look at it on Sunday and take for a ride and see, i know im not going to offer what she's asking thats for sure, something more closer to what RobB had said, if indeed i take a gamble.

If you need an estate and reliability is important to avoid big bills but fuel economy not so much because of your low mileage maybe an early 7th Generation 2.0 petrol estate might fit the bill better...?

Worth a look on Sunday...but it depends if she will take £750 or not lol.

Was I being to generous with a grand? But the petrol is a good idea though.

Maybe not...especially if it's in good condition.

take a good look at it but do not go there with an idea to buy! just to check it out, as they won't sell it at the price they are asking anyway and you can certainly pick up a better car for the money they are asking. if you don't do mega miles i would definately look at an early petrol 7th Generation! very little to go wrong. and with high miles i would only worry about the clutch realy. you have got to be the one to make the choice but i hope the advise on here has influenced you enough to make the best choice possible.

    Hi,

no, i decided to give it a miss, to much risk to take on. Shame, as they look fantastic cars, if the mileage and service history was better i would have definately had it i think. Maybe my next car . . .
