Was at the Diamond Deltics event recently at Shildon Railway Museum NRM Shildon - Plan a visit - National Railway Museum

The English Electric Deltic Class 55 Locomotive:

    Deltics 1.

    Deltics 2.

I took a couple of videos that I can't link as I don't have a YouTube account but these sound amazing. A change fro the usual "clack, clack, clack...." of the "normal" diesel engine

Powered by two of these 18-cylinder babies. Opposing piston, two-stroke and counter rotating crankshafts.

Even the most adamant diesel-hater can see this engine is a work of art - British Engineering - some of the best in the world!

D9009 "Alycidon" was the last Deltic to record 2 Million miles before individual records for the fleet were abandoned.

The age of steam replaced by the age of clag!

I suppose it was clean at the time moving from coal steam trains to two stroke diesel.

Not sure if they had to add two stroke oil to the diesel or if diesel is oily enough... They'd probably be run on cherry as well which I think is a bit smokier.

They were letting people in the cabs on the day at Shildon (v tight to access) but you could only look through the engine room access door window. Would've loved to get right in beside the power units and see what 3,300 horse power physically looks like but we weren't allowed.

I have a feeling that it might be asbestos
    central in the engine areas.....

Plus I don't think I could have got through the door into the engine room! For such a big beast there's not much room inside but they were designed for masses of power not comfort.

It does look like a complex engine and the engineering gone into just shows they could make gold old smokers. Those engine will have all the nasty banned stuff known the man mate you want to stay well clear of them.

They were primarily a marine engine I think. In the Deltic locomotive they're driving a dynamo each which in turn feeds DC traction motors. Apparently the engines had to be physically lifted out and returned to Napier factory for some maintenance tasks they're so complicated.

Yes there's a Pathé news clip on YouTube from the time of the Deltic launch and the shots in the engine room you can see asbestos lagging on the manifolds and exhaust stacks. Exhaust stack fires were quite common apparently!

It's an amazing design. Looking at the animation it looks like it shouldn't work but it just does. I love how one crankshaft rotates the opposite way.
