    Hi All

I'm new here with this being my first post I'm sorry to come in with a question.

A quick introduction my name is Abz from Birmingham. I picked up a 2004 2.0 Accord last week very cheap due to being tappety. Before I bought it I looked on here and found the very extensive guide to adjusting the tappet. I picked the car up from Manchester and drove it back other than being a little tappety and down on power I was really impressed with the way the car drove and the general feel of the interior etc very nice indeed.

I'm by no means a mechanic but I'm not scared to have a go learn by doing as the saying goes. I rebuilt a Zafira engine a couple of weeks ago due to a holed piston so as I said I'm not scared to put my hand to anything. Although rebuilding the engine was basically undo a load of bolts here and there etc I'm struggling with the fine tuning of the tappets. I borrowed a set of feeler gauges from work thought I'd done the job correctly but realised the feeler gauges I was using were imperial rather than mm which the guide gives the tolerances in. Amateur mistake no bother I got hold of a set of metric feeler gauges had another go. Now I understand from the guide that when a piston is at TDC the valves should have a tiny amount of movement in them the others shouldn't. After adjusting the clearances on all valves torquing the jam nuts as specified in the guide I have a little play in all the valves so it will tap worse than when I started. As I said I don't mind doing the big heavy stuff it's the fine details I have no patience with but I'm determined to sort this out. By the way I should mention that I used the timing marks to determine TDC as "on the rock" method wasn't to my liking.

Could someone point out where I could be going wrong or give me some pointers as I really want to get this car sorted out it's been up on a jack for nearly a week and I'm eager to take it out but only when done correctly.

Sorry for such a long post for my first post. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks in advance folks

Hi, Abz welcome to the forum.

If you used the timing marks then you shouldn't have any issues.

Are you sure that its actually the valves that are making the noise ?

Hi speedygee thanks for the welcome

The noise was coming from the top end of the engine if i put everything back together the way it is now it will really tap as all the valves have a little play in them whether the pistons are TDC or not.

I cannot let this beat me

They should have a little play that is normal.

What part of Birmingham are you from ?

    Hi

Sorry for the late reply speedygee, I'm just outside of Birmingham I'm in Halesowen.

I do have an update, I rechecked the valve clearance found 1 jam/lock nut was threaded on the inlet side but put everything back together to see what it sounded like, if anything I think I've made it worse it sounds like an old 1.3 Ford Escort and the slightly louder ticking noise is still there.

I dropped the car off down to mechanic I use earlier this week but I told him not to rush as I have another car I can use, anyway I picked it up this afternoon he says the clearances are fine and believes the car could have previously been run very low on oil and the chain may have stretched like the Corsa's and Micra's do or a problem with the cam shaft itself. I know the mechanic quite well so he didn't charge me anything which makes me think he didn't actually check the clearances, I know if I was him I would've charged for taking the cam cover off etc.

After I checked the clearances there seemed to be a little more power, there are no misfires, rough running or warning lights showing on dash, the car actually drives nice other than being a little noisey.

Does anyone agree with my mechanics diagnosis of the cam chain or cam shaft?

    Cheers

Stretched timing chain would through up a code. What problem could there be with camshaft ? without physical examination, how could he conclude that ? Is he just guessing ?

You live about 20 mines away from me.

I'm happy to have a listen to the engine and tell you what I think. I'm out with family all day tomorrow and got a cricket game on Sunday but drop me a PM and we'll arrange something for sometime.

    Hi speedygee

Thanks for your quick reply, I don't know whether he physically checked it as he had the car for a few days I was only guessing he may have not as he didn't charge me, I know him quite well but if I was in his shoes I would charge for that job.

He gave me the example of a corsa becoming rattly when the chain stretches

My I-CDTI is quieter than that. :Aghast:
I'm sure one of the technical guys will help identifying the problem.

I wouldn't drive that too much if I were you buddy, sounds like a bent valve (pure guess at the moment).

Pop over sometime this week will check it out for properly.
