Just got a 2011 CR-V ES. Weather very hot. Going out in it I set the climate control to auto. I was surprised to see the recirculation light go on. The manual implies that this should be kept off most of the time. Is there a problem, or is it because it is hot, and not bringing in hot air from outside?

When you set off and it is hot in the car, this does happen.
The system is trying to cool things down without bringing in more hot air.
However, if it is very hot inside, the air outside will be cooler, so opening the windows & sunroof, vents all this hot air out quicker.
Then close them all and it will cool down faster.

yeah its a re circulation thing ... every honda in my house (3) does the exact same thing including the NSX when its warm and the A/C set to auto ... so nothing wrong with your CR-V
