I'm looking at cleaning my EGR valve and have heard that one of the best things to soak it in is carb cleaner.

But when I spoke to one of the technicians at my local mechanics he mentioned there was a specific product that could be used to clean it, designed to break down the carbon deposits that's available at most motor factors (except Halfords it seems). He even mentioned the chemical name for it, which I've forgotten. But the only ERG specific cleaning products I can find are aerosols you spray on and hope by some miracle it works.

Anybody got any suggestions on EGR cleaning products, would I be better off with carb cleaner?

Was it isopropyl alcohol (IPA)? That's what's I often use for specialist cleaning, and it is also an ingredient on my carb cleaner aerosol. However, my wife has a chemistry degree and insists it should correctly be called propan-2-ol.

    Hi
I have always used carb cleaner and seemed to do the trick just fine. My accord had it replaced a year ago so not checked it yet. Audis I have had all seemed to get build ups of crud quite quickly ( couple of years) but then that's VW for you.

I was thinking of just using carb cleaner till I was told of something specific, I see no reason why carb cleaner wouldn't do the job. It might have been isopropyl alcohol, it sounds familiar. I'll keep a look out for it while I'm on the hunt for some carb cleaner. Cheers.

I used IPA clean the EGR plate on my 2.0 litre tourer and the results were outstanding http://hondakarma.com/threads/1669/

carb cleaners are good for removing gumming caused by petrol and there is no gumming in diesels.
