    Hi all,

So, I've got my Mercedes up for sale now, and am considering getting a cheap runabout for a while.
Can anyone tell me what matters I need to look out for in this model, and whether I should get the 1.4 or 1.6 engine?

    Thanks for any help.

Both engine are good the 1.6 is better for oomph . I have owned one , just ensure the timing belts been changed the rear tailgate rust issues are addressed.
Brakes need a lot of TLC prone to gunking up ..look out and look for undercarriage corrosion.

Cheers @Ichiban, I do a lot of short 2-3 mile journeys, does the 1.6 return good MPG?

I used to do a lot of short journeys myself for a year or two then i started to rack up the miles before I traded it in for the 7th Generation Accord .

I used to get 35MPG in town and 45MPG on long hauls.

Mum's got one of these in 1.6 variant. She's really happy with it, on short school runs the MPG falls a fair bit and on the motorway its a bit noisy. Other than that its flawless

I think I'm going to get the car I linked to above. The seller seems OK to let it go for £800 and it has a year's MOT and 3 months tax.

Does anyone know if this Civic has magic seats?

Don't think this gen has them, at least my mums 1.6 certainly doesn't.

Also check previous MOTs online - ask him for his last test pass certificate number and key it into the database. It'll give you all the passes/fails since 06. Mum's Civic had issues with emissions tests but cataclean fixed it. If not then chances are the O2 sensor is on its way out which costs a bit to fix.

No magic seats mate.. first see on the Jazz and then 8 and 9th Generation Civics.TBH the 7th Generation has sufficient space but you can't get bike like the newer Civics.

Rob I hope it works out for you , BTW I have. Full service kit for that 1.6 and spare brand new wheel if you do get it I will post it for sale. I just want rid profit is not on the agenda.

Cheers @Ichiban, I'll let you guys know how I get on. Trying to set up a meeting on Thursday.

Trying to decide if it's worthwhile doing an HPI check on a car of this age. Basic checks are sound so far, such as MOT date tax expiration etc.

Ran proper hpi check on car and history is sound.

Car only has one key so I'm gonna try use that to take some money off the price as I understand spares are v expensive.

Has the timing belt been done? 8yrs or 72k miles I believe.
How were the cars past MOT's. Any failures or advisories?

Current owners had car since 08, and car had done most of its mileage before that. It failed 4-5 tests from then until now mainly on innocuous items, drop links, brake light etc, only did 6k per annum or less under current owner.

Last MOT was this, retest done following day with no advisories given. Checked out MOT garage, seem reputable.

I took a look at the MOT history mate, I'm not so sure you should go for this. From the previous advisories which have been carried over, it seems like this car was kept on a shoestring budget and something major could occur very soon. That's just my two pence but hopefully other members can look over this and convey their view..

    The main points:
Parking brake issues seem to be ongoing

I didn't find an MOT pass on the history of this car - why is it not on the database??

2011 test seems especially bad - corroded pipes, oil leaks, rusted discs etc - check if all this has been rectified. I'm not so sure, in 2012 the car was MOTd elsewhere in the same area and had few advisories... why? Was it fixed or were they lenient?
