I bought my Civic (1.6) about a month ago and its service time. I've been recommended oil viscosity 5w40, which I've now bought. But after doing some research online i see more people recommending 5w30 or 5w20 depending on weather conditions.

So my question is, is it ok to feed the engine 5w40 oil?

    Many thanks in advance.

I wouldn't go for anything that Honda don't recommend. 5w30 was originally the recommended oil viscosity so I would stick to that.

I regularly take engines apart and I can tell you that when you take an engine apart you can tell what quality of oil has been used.

To add to what @Chunkylover53 said, use 5w30 but stick to quality oil it really is worth the extra £s.
