This could cause a little controversy, I'm certainly no fan of VAG. However, I've noticed a similarity between a couple of models lately.

The original Accord looks very similar to the original Scirocco.

    Volkswagen Scirocco (1974)

    scirocco-mk1-1. scirocco-mk1-2.

    Honda Accord - 1st Generation (1976)

    accord-mk1-2. accord-mk1-1.

The 2nd Generation Golf looks very similar to the 2nd Generation Civic. Though no so much as before.

    Honda Civic - 2nd Generation (1979)

    civic-mk2-1. civic-mk2-2.

    Volkswagen Golf - 2nd Generation (1983)

    golf-mk2-2. golf-mk2-1.

To me it's almost like one copied the other, and then visa versa. What do people think?

I think designers back then worked to the same design cues there was no individuality at all.

Well at the least the Honda model looks best in both cases, to my taste anyway.

The Accord look very similar, but the Civic and golf look very different and the Golf looks better IMO.

    IMHO:
At that time, no one wanted to be too different.
If that was the shape that was selling, most other manufacturers just 'copied'.
New models evolved, with small changes.

Very few, even now like / want to be too different.
When they've got it wrong, the result is the Fiat Multipla or Nissan Juke.
I really don't like the look of either.

What has come on in leaps and bounds is the technology and engineering.
The problem though, is most manufacturers haven't got to grips with high standards, good workmanship and reliability.
    Just my opinion :Hey:

Thing I prefer about the Civic compared to the Golf is the headlights which look awesome, then the rear pillar being slimmer and suiting the rest of the body better. To be honest, I don't mind old school VW that much - I just can't stand modern VAG in the slightest.

I can't stand the look of the Fiat Multipla either @Nels, but I'll tell you something - my Mum/Step-Dad have one they use for haulage back and forth to Germany several times a year and it's never missed a beat. Was brought 3 years old with already 6 figures on it, and it's now well over double that and still has needed nothing more than servicing. That's actually one of 3 Fiats in the family that's never missed a beat - the other two are now 20 and 18 years old which says a lot, both in the family since new.

Mechanically, they may be okay, if looked after.
I still see them about, now and again.
Clearly practical for carrying capacity - just don't like the look.
