there was one problem with the accord when I bought it it. This was the rear electric tailgate would not stay up when opened, it would just fall down on itself. I got it checked by the Honda dealer and they confirmed that both rear struts had leaked oil out and needing replaced. I have now had them replaced and the tailgate is working perfectly now.

I am pretty sure the original struts where made by showa, but the new honda parts appear to be made by Stabilus , so that is interesting. Anyway I am very happy it's back working.

So guys if you have electric tailgate it may worth checking there isn't oil leaking from struts.

The work was done at honda Chiswick and on the invoice it is marked with the honda part number. But I can't say I saw it with honda packaging. Usually main dealer only use original parts? The struts where 78 pound each

Anyway stabilus is market specialist in struts..so that helps a bit

I am surprised to see non Japanese parts being introduced into the 8th Generation , that would equate to a gradual withdrawal of Japanese parts.

Basically when the car is production naturally all parts come from Japan, on the 7th year there is gradual localisation of parts as phased end of life. To see struts being introduced would equate to 90% localisation.

since the 8th Generation has sold in low numbers do you think Honda would bother with localisation of parts?

Do you think the Showa strut may be slightly weak and therefore they have used stabilus?

Of course they will go the route of localisation on a car which is no longer made save them cost and shipping from Japan. The older the car get people won't come to dealers for parts they start to reduce the inventory of parts and do special orders with local vendors.

Most probably stabilus makes Struts for Jazz, CR-V and Civic so they been told to make the replacement for Accord since it EOL.

Thanks for that, I did order the Honda petrol oil removal tool from holdctoft. I took about 2 months to arrive but at least it was from Japan and not Europe. So Honda still doing good work

Tools like that work across a lot of models so they are not related to one specific car. You will still get Japanese parts but you will soon see the 7th and 8th parts coming from Europe.

How exactly our our electric tail gate is operating?
Does it have oil running through struts or it is only electric operating gate?

Mine electric tail gate when closing emits very strange noise, kind of rattling, i'm considering to replace those struts.
