    Has anyone experienced this problem?
After travelling at speed on motorway for some two hours, I pulled into a service station and as soon as I started coming down through the gears, the engine started cutting out and I had great difficulty restarting it. Eventually got it started but noticed that the orange emission control warning light would not go off. I travelled a further 20 miles to next service station and called out AA, who after consulting EOBD fault codes, diagnosed that the EGR valve was the problem and that it should be renewed ASAP. To get me going, he blanked off the EGR valve and erased the fault code - PO404 - and all was well for the next three hours of motoring. However, the warning light has come on again, this morning, and remains on. So, two questions: does the car require urgent attention? any idea of a realistic cost for replacing EGR valve?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Depends how much do you want to spend in repairing I would say take it to a dealer let them examine it and see if any outstanding software updates are applicable to your car. or you go the ebay route and swap the part and hope for the best

Thanks for prompt and helpful response. When the AA arrived, the patrolman connected my vehicle to his own computer/database to identify the fault. He semmed really knowledgeable and efficient. Do you think he would have been aware if there was a software update required?

AA man in the van to me are glorified tyre swappers, and draining fuel tanks specialist . They hardly get any training and its all on the job training and a lot of goggling on their own devices when they get stuck.

No they won't have any knowledge of any outstanding updates or product updates on your CR-V or any other manufacturer. What they carry is a generic all manufacturer based code reader.

I was called by a friend of mine once with a non starting Scooby. AA man (or rather AA kid) was at the scene, I literally had to talk him through the diagnostics steps to go through, think we managed to diagnose a faulty main engine relay in the end. But without my guidance he wouldn't have got anywhere at all.

Ouch ! Are you still going by the advice that the AA man gave you ?

How was it determined that the EGR actually needs replacing ?

Advice from highly trusted local garage, which, when it diagnosed problem with air conditioning condenser freely advised me that it was a special warranty repair.
Just got a quote of £117 for a used EGR valve from Jap Parts UK. One month warranty on part, so something for me to ponder.
    Thanks for reply.

Hoe about trying to clean the ERG valve to see if that has the desired effect

That's what I was thinking, chances are that's all it needs. Not heard of a EGR actually failing ? Which probably explains the high OEM asking price for it.

I have never seen them fail on a petrol but if it got clogged up that would also suggest poor engine health and maintenance.

They just don't clog up overnight.

Not really if you are handy with the spanners its two bolts off and tap it gently for the carbon to fall out , few quirts of carb cleaner.

an example for you if your EGR is coked up most likely your engine will need a flush too with VTC cleaned too.
