    Welcome to AOC.

As Cliff has already hinted without a code reader you are guessing to what happened, apart from the physical checks of dirty oil or any mechanical fault you can see.

A limp mode is iniciated by a electrical signal and is not mechanical hence you need to know what triggered it first.

Bud, if you are getting the DTC for the VTC solenoid have you cleared the jam , by removing the DTC it won't cure the problem.

You mechanic is selling qaulity porkie pies, blunt but the honest truth.

That is correct there is an update of this scenario with two mesh filters, since your car is out of warranty you will have to pay for it . If you can sweet talk your dealer then they may help you. The dealer can have a look at MARIS to check if you VIN has had this update applied.

All warranty work can be checked up in any European dealer, there a small tip for you.
