Seen a nice looking I-DTEC EX GT on the market at a reasonable price and decent spec. Only issue is it has a towbar. So clearly its been dragging a caravan or trailer about. Although for how long and what weight I don't know. Car is an auto.

Anything I should be looking to scrutinise even deeper? Its from a main dealer so I presume some parts of what may have had extra wear on them will be covered by warranty. Or maybe not!

    Cheers.

It's not Always negative to see a towbar. Mine has one also (detachable). The only thing I used it for so far is a bike carrier. And one day I might use the small trailer from my brother in law.
@Ichiban : you meant ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) in your post, didn't you?

My 2010 I-DTEC auto came with a detachable towbar that had never actually been fitted or used. I put it on 18 months ago and it's been there ever since - it's the only way I can see to protect the back bumper without spending big bucks for a few bits of rubber from Honda.

I must say I have also had towbars on my cars in the past, helps protect its rear end against idiots at lights, does more damage to their car than yours.

I wouldn't instantly see a towbar as a negative point on a car but I would be a bit more cautious. My towbars have never pulled a single thing and come to think of it, never been wired up either.

Well, it's trading a potential bumper/impact bar replacement with a potential warped sub-frame :Innocent:

As a rule I aways avoid cars with tow bar and GB sticker on the back. Could have been half way round Europe several times.

My FR-V has both, and has been (twice). Then again, it was bought as a towcar!:Niceone:

My Accord has a tow bar and has only been used for a bike rack.

The towing limit for a diesel auto Accord is pathetically low anyway so it's unlikely to have been towing anything heavy.

@Deerfoot, I've never looked into the maximum load for towing - what is it?

1100 kg for the auto, 1700 kg for the manual.

For comparison, a DSG equipped Octavia VRS diesel has a limit of 1600 kg. I accept that DSG is a different kind of box to a conventional auto but even so it's quite a difference in towing ability.

A 320d auto also has a limit of 1600 kg.

Intriguing, Honda generally air on the side of caution for all their limits and specs.

That's quite a difference! Thought those dsg boxes were prone to going bang I've been told to stay away big time especially if there's a tow bar on them.

Only people I know with VAG DSGs have had them go bang
