Brothers mate has one and i believe its got mayonaise in the oil filler cap. Sounds like head gasket but his local garage is wanting £1,500 to fix! Of which £400 is just to check!!!?

    Does this sound crazy?

That is the K series engine in that car ! How much mayo does he have ? A little is acceptable but anything more than a spoon full is a concern.

Speedy it can't be that much to fix will it? Has the engine overheated , if it has there is no point repairing it pretty much toast.

£400 to check !! Check what for £400 ?? Mayo is due oil/water mix, therefore head gasket issue is implied.
On the K series there is no other way for it to mix other than bad head gasket/warped head.

That's a one day job head off, good clean, new head gasket, check if head needs skim, refit.

Whole thing should be fixable for £300-£400 assuming the head is skim-able and not warped too much (if at all). The assumption here as Cj was alluding to is that the engine has overheated and therefore the head has warped and caused a leak in the head gasket between a water and oil channel.

If it needed a replacement head just add the cost of that on top (maybe another £200 for second hand one).

But before he goes down that line, I would start by removing rocker cover and verifying how much mayo has accumulated. It could just be some condensation mixed in with the oil.

Just spoke with brother and apparently the guys car stopped working and had to be recovered to the garage. The garage's initial thoughts were that coolant had got into the oil. That's as much as I know.
