Honda has revealed its Nissan Juke-rivalling compact crossover SUV in final production form at the Tokyo Motorshow.
Hitherto called only the Urban SUV since its unveiling in concept form in Detroit in January, it’s now been named Vezel in Japan, though Honda Europe staff were at pains to point out in public that no decision has been made about using the same name when UK sales start in 2015. In private they are more forthright, one saying there was ‘no chance at all of the name being used.’
Whatever it’s called it will launch into a burgeoning marketplace where offering include not just the Juke, but the Mini Countryman, Vauxhall Mokka and, by the time it’s launched, the Ford EcoSport too.
The Vezel is based on Jazz underpinnings and so is capable of being built at any Honda factory around the world capable of making the Jazz, though this excludes Honda’s UK plant in Swindon.
No decisions concerning the engine line up has yet been made though the car is certain to come with Honda’s new 1.6-litre diesel motor, an engine sure to account for the majority of sales. Other options include a direct injection, four cylinder 1.5-litre hybrid already confirmed for the home market and Honda’s new 1.0-litre three cylinder turbo motor.
The car is expected to be offered with both manual transmission and a seven speed double clutch gearbox.
