    Hi Guy,
Service time coming up and I started to think, should I continue with the main dealer or go to independent garage? the car now is 8 years old with all the previous services done by Honda, but I checked with local independent ( my brother serviced his Toyota with them) would be £120 cheaper then my local Honda.... One reason what keeps me with my local Honda is the resale value of the car when its time to say goodbye. It's a lot more attractive when the car has full main dealer history rather then independent. (at least to me.)
Any opinions? which one you go for?

Independent (and not just because it's cheaper). Dealer service history is meaningless on an old car, it'll be judged by its condition.

Honda have a price promise that they will match any like for like quote.

Be careful, a "full service" with one garage isn't always what you would expect!

I trust local lads, my brother does service his car with them every year and not have been disappointed, they let you stay and watch whole servicing process if you wish, so you know what you getting... there is rather few terms and conditions for that price match promise to much hassle with that...

It's customary for new members to Introduce Yourself before asking for free advice.

Others seldom follow the same detailed list of things to check, grease etc. Any indie can manage an oil and filter change, but will they be using genuine Honda parts?
Additionally, they cannot run the updates or action ant additional work (not recalls) that Honda have scheduled for your vehicle.

At the end of the day, you have to decide what you want, or don't want doing and what you're prepared to pay.

I'm saying nothing. If cost is an issue, do it yourself or take it Daves down the road. If you think main dealers are a rip off don't take it there. If you enjoy the fact Honda service your car regardless of price take it the stealers. @Zebster doesn't like main dealers @Ichiban loves main dealers. I work for one. Top and bottom of it is everyone has there own opinion and nobody is right or wrong. You need to make your own mind up. Maybe get some quotes?

Dealers have their places for sure and if there is an issue that you don't know how to do or are unsure of, I would always take it to the dealer without hesitation.

Servicing - I have serviced my own car every 6 months or so regardless of mileage. Its easy to service a car and with my car being 10 years old, the "value" that a stamped log book would have kept would be neglible by now. The amount I have saved over the past 7 odd years by doing it all myself has covered whatever loss I will make at the time of sale. I have receipts anyway

To be fair, other than leaving your sump plug loose there is very little evidence of a bad service you'll be able to see without taking things apart again. In which case you may as well do it yourself.

"Local" people always seem to be trusted. Maybe it's the greasy handshake and relaxed conversation, mate. A bit like that Land-Rover chap off Last of the Summer Wine.

Beefy lol I love main dealers. I chose to go there one to see you lot have a chat, get the work done the get a first time fix, sometimes it not worth getting your hands dirty or like be its CBA to do it , you guys know all the issues seen it before and you can diagnose and fix it with breaking sweat.

This in the long run save me money as the work is done, great price on parts and labour and I don't have to keep coming back to you. Local garages who have not worked on Honda are learning every day so you will end up going there regularly as they haven't got a clue.

See you in 6 months or a year.

Actually, I don't dislike main dealers and have been known to visit them! But neither would I elevate a garage to a guru-like status merely because it currently happens to hold a manufacturer's franchise for my make of car. Quite often that 'main dealer' holds more than one franchise, so it isn't even as though they are dedicated specialists anyway.

And it isn't just about the cost, dealers may not be so convenient to visit and don't necessarily do the best job (plenty of threads here on HK where EVEN Honda dealers have been accused of using 5w-30 when servicing diesels).

Getting independent testimonials is the best way to gauge a garage's reputation.

Main dealer for me these days.

I used an independent once (not on my Honda) - very highly recommended - but found out he'd skimped on something that wasn't on his 'major service' schedule but which WAS on the official schedule.

Yes he was cheaper, but there was a reason for that...

I would of used the main dealer but they have closed the branch in Bexhill. I have no problem with the skill level
of the local independent as they service my and my other half's Suzukis to a good standard. I will be supplying
Genuine Honda parts for them to use though.

You'd only take your beast to a Honda dealer? Quelle surprise!

I paid for the 5 year service package when I bought my Accord. Once that has finished, I will re-assess.
My previous Accords were serviced by me, but some specific jobs were given to the main dealers or my local independent garage - I have known the owner and main mechanics for 30+ years. They are amongst the very select group I would allow anywhere near my cars.

Just getting the name out there. Of course there are other Honda dealers out there. But We are the dogs conkers. I personally think the word main dealer should automatically change to Holdcroft Honda on the site. It would save a lot of confusion. Lol this subject gets boring. Just to clear things up a tad, when I recommend a member of the site to go to a main dealer it does not mean Holdcroft Honda. I recommend it because it's the best solution to the problem they have. Everyone has there own opinion, but that is where people can make up there own minds. Certain faults will have general garages scratching there heads and costing the customer more money. We get garages ordering new prop shafts at over £1000 for what should be £20 worth of diff oil and a flush. And on the other hand is people attempting repairs that are way beyond there ability. I do not say take to Honda for my or my companies benefit (disagree if you like)

If you check out the Halfords Autocentres website, you can see what the Interim, Full and Major service involves, and for how much. Then decide which you want and ring the Honda garage to do the price match with them.

But in reality it is not... Honda technicians are trained to a very high standard, having worked for Honda their training is world class you guys won't even know how good it is. Having said that not all dealers are the same, ever technician is competent not every technician is top tier at a franchise dealer.

But when you find a subject matter experts in STOCK Honda cars like HH then they look after you. But Zeb thinks they are worse than a grease monkey with no knowledge and guidance he get his training by screwing with your car , swear at Honda poor design and give you a big bill for screwing things over, Then have the cheek to say mate you best take that Honda we can't do that, LOL who is the fool then.
