Anyone got any working NAS drives or enclosure lying about? My portable 500GB WD backup drive has started clicking and I need to find a cheap way of storing the endless amount of photos we have in laptops, phones and drives.

Should be able to support atleast 2x2TB drives.

    Advice welcome.

I don't think my devices will be able to read all these MBs.

Actually trying to move away from cloud. 1TB+ storage is expensive. I actually had 50Gb in one place, 115Gb in Dropbox and 100Gb in OneDrive but I want to consolidate all data.

The problem is that your initial expense of getting a NAS setup isn't going to be cheap either. Especially if you add some redundancy in.

Yeah a 2TB Dual Drive NAS is around £150 (£50 for enclosure and £50 each for the drives.)
Typical 1TB Online storage is about £9.99 a month so break even would be 1 and a half year.

The issue I have at hand is, they can change the terms of storage plans and the rates anytime and you cannot do anything about it.

If you have an old PC lying around, that could very easily be setup as a NAS for the time being.

I normally have at least one spare NAS enclosure lying around, but recently flogged them (to pay for parts for the Prelude  ), otherwise you'd be welcome to one of them.

Just remembered... some wireless routers have USB ports that allow plugging in a USB drive and sharing it as a NAS. Dunno if you could do that

If you do this (share USB via router), ensure your router and wireless are secure obviously....

In 1956 the big blue. I love IBM products .. anyway they made this gigantic 5MB HDD. Surely your data will fit look at the size of it! I don't want to know how many millions IBM spend for that back in the day.

HDD price look at them then and look it now

Converting an old PC for NAS duties is something I didn't think of actually. Time to do some research as its more exciting to build something yourself.

    Doesnt have to be expensive.

    I pay £60 for 5 years of 2TB between 5 devices..
I think it is £90 for 4TB between 10 devices.

    Chris.
    - - - Updated - - -
normally £30 or £50 per year for 2tb or 4tb
