my accord has been cutting out randomly and i took it to the garage the have phoned me and told me they think they have found the problem..... they said the have found a loose earth wire on the auto gearbox! could this cause the car to cut out? i have read about the problems with ignition coil i thought this is more likely to be the problem.

any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Demo.
'Cut out': I think you mean there's no power at all left and the engine 'dies' instantly? In such case it can't be the coils, as this would mean the 4 coils would stop all at the same time.
This can indeed be an earth problem! Because the earth of the whole coil/spark plug package moves via the flexible engine and gearbox earth connections.

    Welcome to AOC Demo.

Could well be a bad or unconnected earth. As CJ says, pickup the car and see how it goes.

there you go our american friend

In electrical engineering, ground or earth can refer to the reference point in an electrical circuit from which other voltages are measured, or a common return path for electric current, or a direct physical connection to the Earth.

well got the car back today after spending nearly £300 on it, drove for about 6 miles to work got back in car 30 mins after and it started drove about 200 yards and cut out! have just taken it back to the garage again. told them to do the ignition like i thought it was in first place more expense. so loose wire on auto gearbox had nothing to do with the problem.

Yeah, I thougth: no risk at all with trying out the cable.
And I must repeat: I don't believe in (4!) broken coils. A broken coil gives intermittent missfires and a DTC.
It looks like a loose/rusty connector, relay, fuse, etc...

So have you taken it back to them and ask them why this issue is not fixed .. After all you paid for it. It my pet hate when people pay for work but its bit fixed .. You need to demand a explanation from the garage or money back for the diagnostics. I can't suggest what wrong it without looking at it .

Hopefully it's fixed mate. A fault with the dizzy would explain the random cutting out better.
I had a crappy ford escort years ago and the spark amplifier unit was faulty causing the engine to just randomly die.
