Only 10 years experience? With 11 you can tell the difference between a Toyota and a Honda

One thing that puzzles me is that there is a general consensus among various forums that dealership employees aren't able or trusted to work on their pride and joy. Whereas when a specialist advertises themselves as having dealership experience it's taken as a positive and is an incentive for people to visit. Explain that logic???

My view has always been - and remains - that when you find a good dealer who looks after your car you stick with them. It was a big factor in me staying with Honda as the service staff at Aylesbury are excellent.

My guess is that people are lured to 'specialists' because of cheaper prices and may be willing to accept a slightly lower quality because of that - and to be fair, if they do as good a job as the main dealer for a bit less then why wouldn't you think about it...it just isn't not for me.

Sometimes its because the "specialist" will let you around their workshop, will explain what they are doing and why to your car. Charge a reasonable rate, offer and explain the difference in original and pattern parts, and have a genuine enthusiasm for what they are doing. They also seem to be more aware of their reputation being discussed on line.
The dealer, apart from an exorbitant rate, will be on a quick turnaround, which seems to disillusion its mechanics, hence quite a lot go solo or specialist. I notice that dealers now appear to be allowing more access to see what the workshops are doing, but having seen a dealer mechanic hanging off a ring spanner to "torque" up my caliper bolts at well over £100 an hour(only cos I had to walk around to keep baby amused did I notice what he was doing) it does put one off.
It seems that you need to investigate or get personal recommendation before trusting your pride and joy to someone.

Actually @garf8v you are quite right - it is about trust and recommendation rather than dealer or independent.

I once had a Volvo (don't EVEN ASK !!! :Blushing::Blushing:) and I needed some keys programming, so took it to a local dealership and proudly displayed on their walls were the training certificates of their mechanics. So I walked up and had a good look at them, only to find that the "chief mechanic" was only 18 years old !!

Suffice to say that despite having gone past their closing time they were still there struggling to code these keys. Anyway I ended up in the workshop and found that they weren't even following the instructions that their diagnostic computer was telling them to. They kept repeating the same incorrect process until I pointed out to them what they were doing wrong !!

"My name is Speedy, and I once owned a Volvo..."

Sounds like the introduction to a therapy session.

I might give them a call to see what price they'll do a set of wipers for for my parents' Honda Micra or is it a Nissan Jazz....
