Been interested in building a 3D printer for a while now. I like the idea of knocking something up in some modelling software like Google Sketchup or a CAD app and then seeing it being printed out as a real object.

Couple of months back took the plunge and started on it.

Theres a ton of different "open source" printers that you could make.
The one I chose is called a MendelMax .. the body of it is made from aluminium extrusions, which makes it pretty sturdy.

So here we go start building the base. The blue "plastic" pieces you see are actually printed on another 3D printer.

    2012-10-10 18.02.49.
    2012-10-09 17.35.41.

"A frames" built .. need to make sure everything is dead on square.

    2012-10-10 18.52.27.

Start installed the motors for the X axis
Looks good so far the extruder (ie print head) carraige is installed ...
    2012-10-10 18.55.16.
    2012-10-10 18.55.24.
... until you look closely .. we have an alignment issue !! :Aghast: :Sobbing:

    2012-10-09 21.28.27. 2012-10-09 21.28.45. :Unknown:

    2012-10-09 21.27.55.

I'll carry the storey on later.

After seeing what these things can produce and to what detailed accuracy this is the next biggest must have toy.

can't wait to see this in action and what you produce out of it!

    I think it was 600-700.

I think the price would out a dampener on a few people but what you can achieve with this kit the possibilities are endless.

I can see CAD drawing being shared tweaked and may be the ideal way to get my daughter into engineering and snap her out babies and dolls.

I went for the Mendel Max as its rigid, looks good and it's low maintainence. This is a bit more expensive as construsted of aluminuim extrusions.

There are much cheaper alternatives, you can probably build a Mendel Prusa for under £400, this is constructed from threaded bar.

This is what a Prusa look like :-

    1200_983_Reprap_Prusa_Mendel_Kit_15.

Or theres a Rostock Delta printer. The frame for a Rostock is made from MDF so again they don't cost too much.
The Rostock is a Delta printer which is a different concept of printing. The print bed remains stationary, the extruder is moved in all three axises ... I'll let this youtube video explain the difference :-

A friend of mine has just started looking at building a Rostock, he's sent me the STL files for it, I'll start printing the plastic parts off for him in the next few days. His estimate for total costs on the Rostock is under £300. I'm not sure if he is going to achieve that .. I'll keep you posted.

All fixed up, I'd got couple of extrusions on the wrong locations.

    2012-10-10 20.28.06. 2012-10-10 20.28.13.

Wiring all done (this will be tidied up afterwards)
The moment of truth, first test print coming out.
    2012-10-11 21.45.10. 2012-10-13 00.00.59.

    2012-10-13 18.14.30. 2012-10-13 18.14.40.

Measurement showing calibration off by 0.17mm but if you look closely there is small gap so incorrectly measured.
    2012-10-13 18.27.51.

So there you go, 3D printer up and running.

Need to print some parts out to hold the power supply and motor control circuit under the print bed, the wiring can then be tidied up.

Made a few bits and bobs recently but nothing exciting.

I've got a little interesting project in mind for my son.

Might document that if I get going on it.
