You can tax the car online using the slip you keep from the V5C.

Not true mate, because you've filled the number in from the "New Keeper" segment of the V5C, the system knows to transfer it to you once you're issued with a new V5C.

I bought wife a 2006 Renault grand scenic, so she can use that to take kids school instead of my honda, and i phone DVLA up about taxing the vehicle so i can drive home, and i got told isn't possible till i sent off the logbook and got it back in my name, as there system won't show me as new driver.

That's ridiculous, just tax it using the New Keeper segment and you'll be fine, you'll have proof in your email inbox if it's ever needed. I did this 3 weeks ago with the ATR with no issues.

That's absolute tosh. I taxed a car for a family member using my internet connection, I just needed the New Keeper slip, use the long number on there.

Do it online it's dead easy. It taxes the car straight away.

The website asks you if you are the current owner or new owner.

It's the best way to I recon, quick and easy and the car gets taxed straight away. Just have the car reg, the long number from the New Keepers slip (forget what they refer to is as) and your payment card details to hand.

You end up paying more with monethly direct debit I think. But the whole new tax rule makes buying a used car a bit more difficult!

I pay by monthly on both my cars, while I pay something like 5-10% more (can't remember which) over the course of the year, the freedom to cancel without having to muck about with refunds does it for me. I don't know whether I'll be keeping both of mine on the road at once, or just swapping and changing as needed.
