I'm quite surprised that there isn't a thread on The Olympics yet.

I haven't watched that much of the coverage (what with most of it being in the middle of the night) but 'our' performances have been amazing.

Little old Great Britain (& Northern Ireland) second in the medals table...Germany, France, Italy? Pah! Look at our sporting prowess and bow down to us in the Brexit negotiations. :Bye:

Land of Hope & Glory / Rule Britannia / God Save the Queen etc.

Brexit to be huge success ‘because Britain is good at the pommel horse’

Helps if you get funding from the lottery !
Got to admire the effort these Olympians put in to get where they are
Seen it first hand with one of my nephews - world no 2 in his discipline a couple of years ago -
The time devoted and dedication is unbelievable

Yes, the difference since Atlanta in 1996 (one Gold, 15 medals in total) and then especially Beijing, London and now Rio is spectacular, and lottery funding must be a huge part of that success.

For reasons that I'm not entirely sure of, it makes me feel proud even though a) most of the events are individual therefore supporting one person based on an accident of birth is counter intuitive and b) I have virtually no knowledge or interest in most of the sports we are competing in!

Man not interested in random sport things

What with this and voting to leave in the referendum, my next steps must be to start reading The Daily Mail and buying a Union Flag waistcoat a la Tim Brooke-Taylor...

The first week of it was a bit dire, but it started to get interesting a couple of days ago.

I saw Mo Farah live, what an incredible race that was. Then I watched Andy Murray live as well, I had to keep swapping to other channels when the Argie broke serve, then when I peaked back at the match Murray had broken back, and so it kept going on :jumpy:

I don't recall watching anything live 4 years ago.

We could always petition for political debating to become an Olympic sport - but we may end up with a final for the Gold / Silver Medal like the following. LOL - ( or after winning not accepting the prize - Boris / Gove ! ) -

A parade in Manchester? A missed opportunity IMHO,

If they want as many people to go and be inspired as possible, they should have split the medal winners and had events in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

That's the way to include the whole nation...by including the whole nation!

I know what you mean about the female hockey team. I worked for GrayNicolls a few years back supplying
the sticks to a lot of the top players. Always a good day when they turned up to collect new equipment! :dribble:

So we came 2nd in the medals table, beating China

Or is it actually that China didn't do so well for some reason ??
i.e. we didn't beat China, some of their athletes just didn't turn up

I also heard that we had about one third fewer team members than in London, and that if you were to remove swimming medals Great Britain beat the USA!

Remarkable. That secret programme of genetic engineering using alien DNA is clearly going well...

Think i'm in love with Sam Quek  (Ladies hockey team member btw)

The US did have about 200 more athletes there than us, surely someone can do something statisicy with that figure...

It also seems to be a contradiction that the countries with a high proportion of obese school-kids also does well at the Olympics.
So as well as the paralympics, maybe there should also be a fatolympics , rules are that each "athlete" has to have body-fat > 40% the marathon would be fascinating to watch

Olympic national teams should comprise solely members of the public chosen at random for each event. Then we'd really see which nations had the most athletic populations.

I like both the above ideas.

It's obvious some countries have an issue with athlete populations getting wildly out of hand, perhaps measures should be taken to reduce numbers? NKkmuJY2dZeb.
