Is there any truth in the urban legend that VTEC has never gone wrong?

Well from a engineering aspect it is bullet proof and the system can be thrashed all day long within limits . however if abused or neglected it will fail like any other engine.

So based on that the reliability of a well maintained looked after VTEC engine is not a myth. There are stories of bent con-rods broken valves timing chain tensioner are countless but are down to user abuse and lack of care.

For the i-VTEC engine perspective seen a lot of self neglected damage but never a total failure due to a design aspect.

I had a Civic VTEC i used to thrash the living daylights out of it all the time and it never went bang on me but it was oil changed ECT every 6,000 miles no matter weather it needed it or not my theory is a gallon of oil and a filter is much cheaper than an engine
