Chassis Codes: BE1, BE3, BE5 Production Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 The above affected models have this issue and Honda have released this as warranty extension: +3 years extended warranty (3 years normal warranty period + additional 3 years = 6 years total cover) The Symptoms Corrosion occurs on the outer panel surface of the tailgate. The corrosion may appear in the form of blisters, spots or cracking of the paint. The Cause Limited paint toughness against corrosion. The Fix Corrosion Repair1. Remove all parts and trim to be able to access the corroded area. 2. If the corroded area has sealer applied this should now be removed. 3. Use a wire brush to remove all traces of corrosion. If a wire brush is ineffective use sanding machine or grit blasting techniques. 4 Sand the affected area with 800 grade dry paper until smooth. 5. Degrease and clean the repair area before masking for paint application. 6. Apply epoxy primer to the affected area. Ensure good coverage and penetration into any panel joint areas. NOTE: - Follow manufacturers instructions for drying times etc. 7. Smooth the area with Scotch Bright (#800). 8. Degrease and clean the repair area again before applying the surfacer primer. NOTE: - Follow manufacturers instructions for drying times etc. 9. Once the surfacer primer has dried smooth repair area again with Scotch Bright (#800). Degrease and clean the repair area. Advise for owners: Some owners will view this recall as jumping on the bandwagon to get free repairs on their cars. There are clear guidelines to this extension. Can the legitimate owners with this issue approach your dealers to start the process. For those trying their luck or give Honda bad name go else where to moan! Honda dealers will extensively and thoroughly check the area and if found the corrosion has resulted from stone chipping, scratching or a poor previous paint repair then is not covered by this warranty extension. Honda dealers will take paint measurements before they proceed with the claim.
