    Greetings.

I want to make a new key to my car, but the "Key cutter man" asked if i knew where the immobiliser chip was.

So is the immobiliser chip inside the actual key or is it in the fob which makes the car open and close?

    Thank you.

    Usually in the key.

looks like an issue of "semantics" here

in this context, aren't "key" and "fob" the same thing really ?

either way, it's in the plastic bit that is attached to the metal bit

as @SpeedyGee says the immobiliser chip is built into the key, the separate fob that unlocks the doors is unrelated to the immobiliser, unless your car has the CAT 1 alarm or an aftermarket option.

Just went to another "Key Cutter" shop, which had a machine that could scan where the immobiliser was, and it is true that the immobiliser is in the key.

    Thank you to everyone

For future reference, this is what they look like:

The white chip just pops out.

@Harvey Yep my olds mans old car key which I kept for this very reason as I was intrigued at the makeup up of the immobiliser chip.

lol its gone topless, the old car keys from 60's, 70's used to looked like that didn't they.
