Why this funny shape?

    I was just asked about why what looks like the air intake pipe has this funny attached shape and I have no idea.

    That's an intake resonator.

    "The primary purpose of the air intake resonator is to inhibit pressure wave harmonics, which causes air pressure in the engine and restricts the amount of airflow through the RPM spectrum. In effect, the air intake resonator, via its expansion chamber, slows down the air emerging from the engine. This reduces the engine intake noise and increases the amount of horsepower available."

    Are the I-DSI engines the only ones that have these resonators?

    No I think almost all engines have these in various shapes and forms.

    Another question, sorry: how would this resonator function/work in a turbo-charged engine? Or will turbo-charged engines not have them?

    Turbo engines have them as well. Their function remains the same.. . some people remove it to increase intake noise but its a fact that it results in slight drop in HP.
