ok i think people on this forum probaly think im a little odd to say the least in my taste (or lack of ) of models of honda products:Grin:
well this latest purchase probably really has pushed the the boat out (excuse the pun) with regards my mental state of mind........but is there method in my maddness.??
my fondness for early development has taken a new twist with this quirky little ugly duckling, but like everything honda this ugly little duckling was to develop into a beautiful swan namely the massively successful range of honda outboard engines that we know today !!!!
this little oddball started life in japan in 1964 as the prototype outboard GB30 and only found in japan (one can be found gracing the floor of the honda japans museum!!! ). the power supply the G40 engine was shared with the early honda rotovator ,the honda generator and their waterpump and probably other items which I've yet to discover!
this GB40 engine is the first outboard motor honda made for the world wide market and lanched in 1967 very little is know of its success and i beleive it was short run as the more streamline models were available in 1970 and from this date they nrver looked back !

i took delivery of this little engine on saturday morning and by the afternoon i had made a stand to mount it on from scrap bits of metal in my yard
it has a belt drive from the engine to the top of the propeller shaft which transfers to an internal sprocket which runs a chain down the shaft to anothewr sprocket which drives the propeller
at present the belt and guard is missing but apart from that it appear complete
to my amazement a dash of fuel and a whiff of easy start it burst into life and choke and throttle were in functioning order !
after inquiring round numerous old and established honda marine dealerships only two knew what it was and only one had seen one and that was at the 50th anniversary last year at the southampton boat show where honda japan brought over their museum example for loan for the display !!!!!
I've already recieved a considerably large offer for the GB40 from a main dealer which i have decline but have offered to loan it for open days at honda marine dealerships
mmmm just got to restore this one me thinks

sorry to all that have been interested in following this posting
apart from a long drawn out purchase of my house and my Civic duties to honda  the story can now continue
this little project is going to prove to be my hardest ever challenge purerly due to total lack of achived information
so after weeks and weeks of research have only turned up only a few golden nuggets
and here is the first of them
at the begining of the year (pre purchase of the gb40 ) i bought off a seller on ebay a collection of nos generator manuels out of hundreds he had ,it was then a few week after i purchased the GB40
a flash in my memory i had visions of a honda outboard manual in the ebay sellers collection of manuals ( i had already trawlled the internet for a manual and after some time had manage to download a poor copy of the GB40 )
i eventually found some saved pictures of the sellers manuals and found he did have indeed the GB40 manual and parts book unused nos :happycrying:
i contacted the seller but to my dismay found that he,d sold them i asked him to who but he had had so many sale that he could not find the buyer :Ohdear:
then came one of my brighter ideas ,i started trawling the sellers feedbacks and after several pages i found the buyers hidden id he,d bought 8 of the sellers manuals !!!!
on contacting the seller and giving him the details of what i,d found he quickly sent me the buyers ebay id and i immediately sent the buyer an ebay message
hey within half an hour i got a reply
    and this is the reply

    Hello Alan,
I too am a vintage Honda collector. I have a feeling that we may be connected via Facebook as I belong to some of the Honda collectors page. Congratulations on your rare find. I have not been a able to find a GB for the longest time. What's interesting is that I can find a 1954 Cub engine or a Dream Type D every so often but not a GB. I will sell you the manual and the parts catalog under 3 conditions. 1) please let me know if you find any leads on a GB30 or 40 if you come across one. 2) please keep me posted on your restoration of the GB. 3) please share any pictures of your collection.

I don't have the price on them at this time since I have to check what I payed for but I will sell it to you for the price I payed plus postage. I am also open to any trades of vintage items.

Shall we move this conversation over Facebook?
Ebay is not allowing me to send you my email address

Looking forward hearing back from you.

here,s a link to my generous friend from the us

i am for ever in the gentlemans debt for his kindness as he has reluctantly parted with these extremely rare manuals
without these manuals it is more or less impossible to find the parts with out part numbers ( although with the information near impossible to find ) but i have already made some headway due to the ownership of the manuals another story for another day
these manuals are the only known copies to exist at the moment ( although there is a pdf of the owners manual if you can finda link)
heres some pictures of the holy grail of all manuals
