Asked if Beatty knew about his role in the song, she said "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!".

Only the 2nd verse was, other verses about other men, more in BBC article

edit: I've removed most of the quote as it was skewed all over the place
something wrong with the formatting ?

From the linked BBC article... 'The lyrics in the chorus accuse him of being "so vain I bet you think this song is about you".'

So he would have won that bet!

However, that is the chorus, and there are 3 verses ...

Verse 1 ....who is this I wonder
You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
    Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and... CHORUS

Verse 2 this is Warren Beatty
You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and... CHORUS then CHORUS again

Verse 3 ....who is this I wonder
Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and... CHORUS then CHORUS again

I wonder what a punk-rock version would be like

btw, I didn't know what a gavotte was, so I looked it up, and I found some fantastic damsels demonstrating a gavotte, clad in various costumes, and golly it just gets better and better .....

I always assumed that verse one was about Jagger, but I see that's now been denied. No idea about the third verse!

Gavotte? I thought it was cavort? But I know you'll have looked up the correct line...

Anything sounds better when performed in a punk rock style. I shall be enjoying a few punk rock covers in Shrewsbury tonight!

I thought one of them was supposed to be Jack Nicholson.

Sure I heard somewhere that the 'bride in black' reference in the Dave Stewart (and the Spiritual Cowboys) song 'Jack Talking' was in some way connected.

That was years ago though, so I may be confusing things!
