If you need to expose a length of the wire to do a repair it will be easier to remove the interior trim on the central pillar. The wire runs down the pillar then along the floor so if you feed the wire back through the pillar you should have about a foot or two of wire to play with. That's the best you'll manage because he loom runs the length of the car.
Further to Doc's comment, If you think you're going to struggle soldering the wire in the space you have, I'd suggest using heat-shrink crimp connectors.

Maybe it's a faulty door switch then? Could easily be worn I suppose maybe remove the switch and unplug the wire tape it up so it can't touch anything metal and if the light stays off it'll be the switch.
