The new Diesel Accord herald a new era of car manufacturing and gave Honda instant success with far reaching impacts for all future Honda's. Diesel were the car to manufacture to win European needs. European sales debut for end of 2003 The 2.2 litre diesel variants of the Honda Accord saloon and Tourer made their public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2003. In the first six months of 2003, Honda's European sales were 104,338, a 13.2 per cent increase in an overall market that is in decline by 2.6 per cent. The new Accord range launched in 2003 played a key part in that growth and recorded sales over the same period of just under 15,000 units. Its role was set to increase further still with the launch of the new diesel-powered saloon and Tourer models towards the end of the year, and European sales of the diesel Accords were expected to cross 15,000 units in a full year. Comprehensively equipped Standard specification includes rain sensitive wipers on selected models, a revised DVD satellite navigation system with a 7" touch screen operation available as an option, and CD/radio packages offered as standard throughout the range. All diesel Accords are equipped with dual zone climate control air conditioning, allowing the driver and front seat passenger to select their own preferred temperature independently of one another, a feature normally associated only with premium class saloons. A comprehensive safety package which includes front and side airbags is complemented on all diesel models by curtain airbags to offer enhanced security in the event of a side impact. Significantly, these deploy faster and cover a larger area than many other systems on the market to maximise their effectiveness. Honda achieved 4-star results for the Accord in the Euro NCAP crash tests thanks to extensive body engineering designed to cope with impact energy in a controlled manner; similarly, a series of pedestrian protection measures maintains the company's outstanding record to date in this section of the Euro NCAP tests, by achieving a 2-star result. Extensive measures to improve on sound and vibration isolation added to the serenity within the Accord. Additional and more effective sound absorption materials were used extensively throughout the bodyshell and the adoption of a new engine mounting method significantly reduces the levels of noise and vibration Chassis A chassis fine tuned as a result of an extensive driving test programme in Europe matches the aerodynamic package. Providing a strong sense of security, the Accord uses Honda's established and respected double wishbone front and 5-link double wishbone rear suspension designs revised in a number of key areas. The Tourer's rear suspension differs from that of the saloon, the trailing arm set-up designed to maximise cabin space. (VSA) optional on Diesel Sport models and standard on Executive versions The Accord chassis's effectiveness is helped by a bodyshell that possesses higher levels of dynamic stiffness than previous models, delivering heightened responses to driver input and pin-sharp precision on the road. Executive diesel models (optional on Sport) also have the added advantage of VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist), designed to help the driver maintain control during cornering, acceleration and sudden collision-avoidance manoeuvres.
