One of my gripes is car review sites and their crappy little car reviews they do. I just came across this gem on Whatcar on a review of the 6th Generation Civic. Full review of Used Honda Civic Hatchback What Car?

Apparently Honda engines are so complex that you need a rocket scientist to keep them going. :Rolf:

I'm cracking up on this AHAHA :Rolf::lol::lol::Rolf::happycrying::happycrying:

How the hell do these people get a job? Most of these mags and review site also sing the same tune all the time, which is "x,y,z car is great, the bestest, fantastico, but we would still go for the BMW, VW or Audi". :Epic Fail:

I prefer to use my own judgement on cars rather than some overpaid and opinionated reviewer who has his fingers in certain pies and subsequently bends the rules accordingly.

^^ To be fair, if somebody flew me to the South of France and put me up in a nice hotel for a few days I'd be inclined to say nice things about their product too

The problem with so many of these reviews is still opinion being presented as fact.

Like you @Nighthawk , and especially since my experience with a VAG product, I now do my own research and make up my own mind based on my opinion - after all, my opinion is at least as valid as a cub reporter working to a template for a car magazine!

Its impossible to be completely objective when reviewing something subjective when it stirs your emotions, which is what so many reviewers try to do. They rate it on their own personal criteria of what they deem is appropriate in a car and what isnt thereby meaning that we are attracted to that which does not match our personal criteria and attempt to impart that on others.

The trend you will see on most review sites is they always recommend either a JLR, Ford or some German car, and everything is written, and Japanese cars are always brushed off with the same old cliches from the 70's which sometimes borders on xenophobic.

The first quote is bang on Honda engines go on for every they don't need a 9000 mile service they need a 12500 or a year service.

There is a lot of truth in this once the engine cylinders are bed in to a particular RPM they will behave in the same manner no matter how much you open the throttle or ring its neck it will be a slow car, that is why you should nail these engines from new and keep using their entire rev range to time to time. They are absolutely correct here chaps. Come down test drive any of my Honda cars and bike they leap forward when the trottle is opened.

But the problem is, most people read these reviews and base their opinion on them and take on the same prejudices of the reviewer which sometimes can even decide the fate of a car. Take Honda for example, for 2 or 3 decades now Honda is constantly derided by the press as being an OAP car, when they clearly are not, subsequently the image of their car suffers, the Jazz is a good example, seen as naff and an old persons car, when infact its a better car than most other cars in the segment and even looks better than some other crap, although im not a fan of it myself.

What Car? make me chuckle when they give high marks to German cars for "quality and reliability" ignoring the results of their OWN annual reliability survey, and preferring instead to drone on about soft touch plastics...:brickwall:

@Ichiban - so when I get my new (new!) CR-V i-VTEC at the weekend, I should drive it hard for the first few miles rather than "running it in" gently? Correct?

Honda's don't need a specialist to service them either.

As for the last one, the writer is saying the engine go bad if you don't rev them, that sounds like nonsense to me, of course you need to rev a N/A to get the power, especially on a VTEC as the power delivery is linear and increase up the rev range, but what they write is nonsense and gives the wrong impression.

Here's another one from good old Das Autocar sponsored by Volkswagen : 2017 Honda Civic 1.0 i-VTEC Turbo SR review review | Autocar

Full of loads of stereotyping, age old xenophobic remarks & downright nonsensical comments.

Apparently Honda designed the 9th Generation Civic before the 2008 crash and when the financial crash happened they tore the design apart. Apparently it was also shite cos it looked different read actually designed and not some boring fridge like a Golf, and perhaps this poor excuse of a journalist can tell what other N/A petrol engine is as good as R18 even to this day? Very few will be as good, it's smooth, rev happy and efficient can do 45mpg real world...It just doesn't fit in with the current fad of downsizing and bolting on a turbo.

Who were the previous opposition then?

Apparently a VW Golf and Ford Focus are impeccably styled  they are the equivalent of white goods, the washing in my house is more interesting in design than a Golf. Throw in a bit of xenophobia about how the Japanese can't design anything and only come up with 'wild ugly manga' designs.

Apparently Honda's are plastic fantastic, because a golf or none of the euro rivals don't have plastics? The Golf has fake plastic trims that wear off after a year...

The Honda isn't good enough for them to comptere with Golf, so its prized next to your stack em high sell em cheap cars like Astra's.

    Rant over.

ok, so the golfs I looked at from 2003 range from about 400 quid to an eye watering 7 grand for an R32, that's about the same age as my Accord. most of the "hold their value" prices are by dealers and people trying to sell private at dealer prices. average price would be about a grand.

Average price for an Accord of the same year is about 1200 - 1500
