I am a bit surprised at this warranty extensive as it reminds me of the similar surface corrosion on the my 7th Generation Honda Civic. The conditions and areas are near identical. Nevertheless this will help our CR-V owners.

Honda has announced the following CR-V chassis and the years are affected

    CR-V RE5 07, 08, 09, 10
    CR-V I-CTDI RE6 07, 08, 09
    CR-V I-DTEC RE6 10

Visible corrosion may occur on the outer tailgate surface, and can be as a result of contact with licence garnish or may just appear as a blister on the outer panel.

    The Causes?

Areas that have been subjected to some form of paint breach may appear to exhibit corrosion at an accelerated rate, due to the effectiveness of the protective Zinc galvanised steel panel potentially being compromised
during assembly. The paint breach may have occurred due to manufacturing issues, normal road use
    damage, or industrial fall out.
Note: Corrosion as a result of normal road damage such as stone chips and industrial fall out are not deemed a manufacturing warranty concern and therefore NOT covered by this extension.

    The Fix?

All potential manufacturing causes of paint breach, or Zinc Galvaneal effectiveness have been eliminated.

    The Warranty Extension Period

Surface corrosion caused as a direct result of this manufacturing defect will carry an automatic warranty extension of an additional 3 years (3+3) Unlimited mileage.

Owners who notice such a defect should approach their local Honda dealer who will asses the condition and if the process the claim if it falls within these outlined parameters.

Bump for all 3rd Generation owners to look carefully on the tailgate when you are washing your car next time. We have seen the worst of the winter now I hope..

keep your eyes peeled open for this corrosion and get it rectified, anyone buying a second hand car enquire if this has been done.

Although I wash and clean my car on a regular basis, I have not looked in the area specified. I must have a really good look this weekend, probably remove the CR-V badge to make sure.

Unfortunately one of the first 3rd Generation CR-V Dec 2006 missed out on extension by few months, Honda didn't want to know

I'm waiting to hear from Honda UK at the minute. Bought or 58 plate (29th Jan 2009) CR-V last week and didn't spot the rust under the chrome trim. My local Ryland Honda have taken pics etc to send to Honda. Hoping they'll sort it as 6 years old and rust there isn't good, I had Ford Escorts and Mondeos with less rust at the same age! I know my luck they'll say I'm 6 weeks to late for the warranty!

Does this apply to the FR-V at all?

I'm pleased to have found this thread as mine is just 5 years old and I have noticed a small rusty spot between the numberplate and the chrome trim and I thought as it was over 3 years old there was no point in showing them. Let's see what the dealer says.
